Havoks' Performance. 28/10/04

First of all.
Let me just say that,
A lot of the people in Hong Kah
have no manners.

And lack common courtesy.
Esp this year's lower sec.
Disgraceful bunch of idiots.

Wonder what they get taught in Civic & Moral Education?
It seems that their form teachers lack the proper skills
to infuse proper civics into the students.
Thus,
the school will continue to churn out
students who are uncivil and lack proper moral fibre.
If this worrying trend continues.
Fucktards cannot even sing the National Anthem
and recite the pledge properly.
Ass holes.
Disrespecting the nation?
Where do they get off doing that?
Disgrace.
(This article has direct relation to Havoks' performance.)

Havok Showcase 28/10/04
HKSS.

Review Written 29/10/04.

First of all,
the behaviour of the audience was disgraceful.
Lacking in proper courtesy for the performers.
That, might have affected Havoks' performance
negatively in someway.
I don't know.

It's probably due to the fact that most of the
members in Havok have little exposure
to public performance.
Thus letting the negative attitudes of
the crowd go to their heads.
Shouldn't have been like that.
Should have trained up to be able to face the pressure
of performing publicly,
If they want to be able to continue performing in HKSS.
Let's face it,
How many ppl in HKSS can you say are polite audiences
when it comes to performances?
Rowdy behaviour is expected,
instead the audience expects the performer
to be able to take the heat.

On to the more technical aspects of
Havoks' performance.
Acoustics wasn't good.

I don't know why.
It could be due to the fact that the school has lousy
AV equipment and support.
But the acoustics were definitely NOT good.

First of all.
The really big issue I had with the acoustics,
was that I could not hear the drums.
I had to strain my ears and concentrate
to be able to hear the drums.
And that's really bad.
For me, personally,
the real essence of all bands (rock/metal etc.)
is not the vocals or the guitars.
Its being able to feel the rhythm that only
the drums can offer.

Unfortunately,
I don't think the AV equipment could be blamed in this case.
The drums were too far back in the stage.
And thus the only sound that could be heard was what the Mic
could catch.
Unfortunately, the schools microphones suck.
Which resulted in the fact that the drums were
virtually non existent.

Suggestion: Move the drums closer to the audience.
At least, don't hide the drums in the corner of the stage.
Thus reducing the dependency on the microphones.
Having the drums closer to the audience could also help
with Stage presence.
No matter what people say. Having the drums visible
and audible is intimidating.
Display it proudly,
I say.

The placement of the band members seemed wrong.
On the issue of the drums,
Perhaps you did not need the synthesiser to be so prominent.
Switching the placing of the synthesiser and drums might help.

Also,
The guitarist should not stand together in one corner.
makes for a very weird experience aurally.

Let me illustrate the situation faced by the audience.
First the upper sec.
Very into the performance initially,
then after the first song, where they got blasted by the
guitars, began to get restless.
Yep,
the amplifiers placed too in front.
That made the guitars VERY overbearing.
for the upper sec.
Whoa.
imagine sitting there hearing the guitar music
blast at you for 15 minutes.
That also drowned out the synthesiser and drums.
The vocals making it.
Barely audible. (this is blatant exaggeration of course.)

Synthesiser?
Very subtle.
Almost too subtle.
Should have more of a presence.
Yep.
It also sounded damn wierd...
Different from the recordings...

Weird.
V. Weird.
Sounded wrong too.

As for vocals.
Rapping part was soft.
Not too bad though.

Li En really shone through.
He was sick?
Couldn't tell, apart from the fact that his voice
was slightly off.
That is to be expected from live performances.
But he had most stage presence.

Could see he was feeling the music,
as he hopped around to the music,
grooving to it.
People critical of him should die.
Ha ha.
Yep.
That's it.

That's my critique of Havok's performance.

Author's Note:
I Am not a hater of Havok.
In fact, I rather admire their guts, dreams and talents.
And also their music.
I'm sorry that they had such a tough time
for their maiden showcase.
But with time, hopefully their live performances can
live up to their recordings...

P.S. This review is still in coherent and disorganised. If I have the time,
I might organise it somewhat.Sorry.
